Elliptical Superconducting Cavities

Our research in the field of superconducting RF resonators started with elliptical resonators. The major activities in this area were related to the APT project. The structures of interest were single and five cell elliptical resonators for proton acceleration. The structures were derived from elliptical resonators for electrons with a beta (fraction of the speed of light)= 1.0 and had reduced beta values of 0.48, 0.64 and 0.82.

While the APT project never led to the construction of a superconducting accelerator, the work has seeded the linac design for the SNS project. In this section of our publications you find information on the design, construction and testing of the APT resonators.

Spoke Resonators

To extend the application of superconducting resonators to even lower proton beam velocities, for the AAA project specially designed low-beta resonators were considered. This part of our publication listing represents the design, construction and testing of spoke resonators at LANL and in collaboration with industry.

Further information can be found on the website of an international workshop that was organized by LANSCE-1 in October of 2002.

Power Couplers for Elliptical Cavities

The work that has been done in our group on power couplers for elliptical cavities focused on the needs of the APT program. This required a coupler for very high average transmitted power. The publications presented here represent the work that has been done on the design, construction and testing of the APT power couplers.

Power Couplers for Spoke Resonators

Spoke resonators need special considerations for the power feed to the cavity. Up to this point only design work has been done on such a coupler. The main emphasis is the interface between the resonator and the power coupler, as the interaction is much stronger than for the scenario of a coupler attached to the beam pipe of an elliptical cavity.

Miscellaneous Papers

Other work done in the superconducting RF team is still loosely related to the projects above. The work includes studies of new materials, multipacting and semi-analytic models of cell coupling in multi-cell structures.
